Started the day off with another sunny, albeit chilly, morning. Running was good. I was a lot more relaxed than the past few days. Nicholas, the person driving the support vehicle, and I had a long chat at McDonald’s last night and we agreed to both work on our communications. We certainly have our differences but I believe that if we communicate openly and treat each other with respect then we can most likely come to a common ground.

I started my run on 99e, a major local road, then branched onto a quieter road where I had a chance to pet a cow. Not a big deal but petting a cow can be challenging. I initially ran by the farm which had a single cow within it’s fences. I thought he/she must be lonely so I approached the fence but it ran away. I reached for my camera phone but stopped short of snapping a picture because I didn’t want to scare it away. So I stood about 5 feet from the fence and started talking to the cow. Now some of you might wonder if I have a problem for pausing the world run to talk to a cow:) well, as the saying goes, I believe in smelling the followers along the way. Anyways, the talking worked. The big fellow moved a little closer to the fence, I moved a couple of feet closer and talked a bit more then eventually it was licking my hand. But it didn’t seem to like the taste of my sweat much:)

I continued on and came to a part of the road that was flooded due to recent rise in water levels. I was about to take my shoes & socks off to cross the water before a SUV drove by and got then all wet. I finished the rest of the run in my soaked shoes and socks.

I grabbed a quick bite after the run then headed to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Lane County office as planned. Jose, the Executive Director, and the other folks there were very welcoming and had arranged others to attend. I was a little embarrassed that they went through all that trouble to come. I am fine talking to people that I come across but always a little uncomfortable for making others go out of their ways to meet me.

Diane, one of the locals, even took Nicholas and I for a short tour of Eugene afterwards. I had a chance to admire the historic Hayward Field. The field was closed for resurfacing so I walked, not run:), a loop around the building to soak in the moment.

After we said good-bye to Diane, Nicholas dropped a bomb on me: he is taking the 9:00am train back to Seattle tomorrow morning. We have 12 days to go before our one-month agreement and he doesn’t think it’s worth it to keep working on our differences. He also thinks that I would have a better chance of finding a new driver in Eugene vs when we are at the coast, which I agreed. He hopes to end the work relation in friendly terms. I told him that I would never give up working on an issue as long as both parties desire a resolution but I also respect his decision. The run will be stalled but things happen for a reason and I just have to go with the flow.

We stayed up and chatted about things that have happened and some of the lessons that each of us has learned from the journey together. Then we had to get ready to go to the train station in the morning.
