Just got out of an interview with the University of Oregon radio station on campus, KWVA News. I had a lot of fun chatting with the hosts: Thor, Luisa and Eric. I initially worried that I would come across as low energy or boring like I did at my presentation a couple of days ago. So I had something to eat and took a short nap beforehand. I was also feeding off the positive energy of the hosts. Thor was calling me a “bad dude” but soon found out that I wasn’t like that at all:) The hosts have checked out my website and learned about my Canada run so they had some preconceptions. In fact, my head is a little bloated right now from talking about myself for the last hour or so and I am not comfortable with that. I’m not trying to be humble but it creates problems. For example, after the interview I was wondering if people I saw around the campus were looking at me because they heard the show. That was an illusion because they wouldn’t have been able to recognize me from a radio show! So the focus on me during the interview inflated my sense of importance. The radio show didn’t make me better and I was pretty much the same person as before the interview. I have to admit that I felt good when people were praising me but I don’t like the fact that it leads to false senses and deviation from reality. The reality is that I’m just another human being and I’m not any more or less important than the next person.
Ok, enough rambling…for now:) I was really glad that I had a chance to share my story and some of my thoughts (and I was just saying that I’m not narcissistic :). I talked about my experience with physical, verbal, and emotional abuses as a child. I shared the fact that I went from having no self confidence to feeling inner peace and following my heart as I do now. I also talked about my frustrations with finding a driver and the despair that has been developing.
I have to admit that I haven’t been 100% focused on getting a driver all day long. 100% is like when I was looking for my first job out of college where I forced myself to apply a minimum number of jobs each day. Now a days, I allocate time to keep myself relaxed and entertained. For example, I even went to a Ducks women basketball game last night (for those who are not familiar, University of Oregon names all their sports teams Ducks and they are CRAZY about them!). I got a sense of why this town is so fanatic about their sports teams. Anyways, I found that staying relaxed is the best way to receive good things when they are ready to happen.
I haven’t been just sitting around waiting for things to happen either:) I have posted the job at the university career centre and contacted a number of student clubs. I also visited Eugene’s employment centre but I wasn’t able to post the job because I needed a tax number from the states. I asked if I can talk to the job seekers there but my request was politely refused – actually, the person at the front desk was very nice but her boss looked at me like I was a bad person. Anyways, I ended up standing in the lobby outside of the employment center talking to people coming in and out of the place. I had pretty good luck and almost all of the people I talked to were very nice about it. Some wish they can leave their wife and kids behind to go on this crazy trip with me and others just wish me luck. I found a serious candidate (after the last one, I wanted to make sure that they are very serious:) and we are working out the arrangements right now. I’m cautiously optimistic and I still plan on looking into the option of running with a stroller in case things don’t work out.
It’s almost 9pm and I should find some R&R on this Friday evening:) But wanted to mentioned two very nice people, Amanda and Tess, from the campus newspaper who interviewed and photographed me earlier today. We had nice chats (well, mostly me talking:) and I really appreciated the connections. I think I enjoy one-on-one talks more than presentations to larger groups because I like to hear what other people have to say as well. However, given what I’m doing, I better get comfortable with talking to groups as well:)
